Henry Winter Home
This especially attractive bungalow style home has an interior and an outside end chimney, shed dormers on the front and back of the roof, and exposed rafter ends. The windows are twelve over one on the second floor and leaded glass on the first. The enclosed full length front porch has battered porch piers and leads to a front door with one large pane of beveled glass. The eastern portion of the front porch has been made into an extension of the living room. Wood shingles cover the second story, and narrow wood siding with corner boards covers the lower level. The foundation is of brick.
This home was built in 1912 by Henry Winter, an assistant cashier at People’s State Bank in downtown Holland, and partner in Notier, Van Ark and Winter law firm. The Winters remained there until 1936, and then Andrew and Isabella DuMez, of DuMez Brothers (dry goods) lived in the home from 1940 to 1952. They were followed by John and Winifred Hollenbach who resided in the home until 1972. John was dean and later president of Hope College.
